The Secret to a Healthy Lifestyle (Part 2)
Have you ever wondered how your life would be affected if you didn’t have your car? Most of us would certainly panic but for many Europeans, life without personal transportation is the norm…and they are healthier as a result.
Walking as the standard has been proven to be a major contributor to overall health in many European countries. With obesity (and the diseases associated) in the US on the rise, it might be well for many of us to take a look and follow the lead of our European brothers and sisters.
According to Fitness and Weight Loss Center Magazine, walking has more benefits than we sometimes realize and power walking is the best way to reach overall goals for weight loss and better health:
The following are just some of the many benefits of power walking:
1. Your cardiovascular health will get better and you will lower your chances of having a stroke or coronary disease.
2. Your mental health will improve as you have less anxiety and stress.
3. You will develop stronger and more defined muscles.
4. Your weight and body fat will go down.
5. You will have more energy and better self-esteem. (Fitness and Weight Loss Center website)
Power walking is simply taking the casual stroll to the next level. Increasing speed, treading up and down hills and moving your arms to match your gait are all easy steps anyone can take to increase cardio output and “up the game” while walking. While no definitive amount of time is required to enjoy the benefits of walking, averaging 30 minutes per day is all it takes to notice the positive changes described above.
Throw in the very inexpensive equipment required for a daily walk (just a pair of good walking shoes) and ask a few friends to join you, and you’ve created an enjoyable ritual to your day. The benefits will follow.
Make sure to be prepared as you pick your exercise program. Accidents can happen and preparation in advance will help those accidents become manageable.
Orange County, California offers CPR Certification Classes to the community. Taking the time to become trained in these skills is another step to a better, healthier lifestyle.
So walk – don’t run to a CPR or first aid class and move yourself into wellness.
